Breakthrough Tip for week of 3/24/2014

As soon as you’ve finished reading this tip, log off. If you can, go outside with your writing notebook. If you can’t go outside because you’re at your day job, go to a window. If there’s no window where you work, go the the bathroom, into a stall and lock it. Remember five objects you used the day before.  Remember five images that evoked emotion in you.  Remember five scraps of conversation you had or heard. Write all these down and close the notebook. Be still for a few minutes. Sometime later in the day or the week, read your notes to yourself. Set your timer for twenty minutes and pick up your pen. You can use this prompt: Here is part of a day in my life…

(So far, none of you have sent me your writing from these prompts. You will never write by thinking about writing – and I would very much like to see how these suggestions affect you.)
